I predict American Motors will stop making cars in Wisconsin in the near future whether or not the state’s money is used for a temporary propping-up operation.
These competitors are beginning to understand how essential it is to take a long-term view of their businesses for example took its top 40 managers on a two-day retreat to ponder what their corporation will look like in the 21st century. They are studying totally [20 years later large portions of these "new" methods are still ignored by many - ]. These methods take continuous quality improvement as a central guiding principle.…Investing in American Motors now in any form is a mistake. If we need some long-term thinking in forming wise creative policies. It is difficult. I know for legislators and other elected officials to take a long-term view when the tangible reward is re-election and elections come around quite frequently. Our founding fathers are remembered for their long-term vision. We need to change the way our democracy works so that long-term visions is an integral part of all important discussions on economic development on the local state and national level.
In 1985 I assumed the role of plant manager of one of the world’s foremost automotive tool manufacturers in a small northern Iowa town. It was then that I was introduced to. At the time the company had a greater market share than any of its individual domestic or foreign competitors but ominous and encroaching signs from abroad began to threaten its pre-eminence in the automotive aftermarket. So steps had to be taken to arrest this incursion that could mean the end of its reign.
It was then as I began my tenure at the company that we began with Deming’s concept of later changed to Quality Control and the practice of Toyota’s kanban cell manufacturing techniques that would enhance the already high-quality standards that had defined the company for decades.…If we had listened if we had followed him if we had incorporated his thinking not only in the automobile industry but in government in the ubiquitous economy collapsing around us and in our private lives we would now be far better for it.

Download the episode directly subscribe to in iTunes or other podcatcher to have episodes downloaded automatically or just click play below to listen to it right here:
This text will be replaced
Late on a Friday after a week of somewhat thin IT Management news and still manage to pull out some interesting topics:
John’s experience with change management in the enterprise. Though we don’t mention it check out.
about Amazon. SaaS offerings and general cloudage.
Amazon and CapGemini. John mentions moving SharePoint to the cloud which also brings up the news.
We talk about at length me having spent some time looking at it more this week. John seems more informed and articulate on the topic than I do.
I cover the cloud/SaaS related news from Adobe MAX the conference. Also see that I mention.
My time at the IBM Software Analyst Summit this week: it was less about products and more about how IBM goes about doing the business side of things. Namely the agenda was about that map various types of businesses to the software that can help them and the way that software is put together and used. That said there’s some Tivoli stuff mixed in when it comes to entering new markets via Maximo and Micromuse.
The Microsoft System Center Operations Manager Cross Platform management pack for Suse Linux which I incorrectly say is GA’ed:
Also. I forgot to mention an endorsement for John’s be sure to check those out. I’ve been behind on my Debriefing podcast and it looks like John has picked up the slack in a fantastic way.
Disclosure: IBM. Microsoft. Hyperic and Zenoss are clients. See for other clients mentioned.

I've drunk the Drupal kool-aid -- it's a great system which uses for a wide range of websites. I use it for my personal sites as well. Not the easiest CMS to get up and running although that's gotten much better with the latest channel. And for those who are overwhelmed by the hundreds of add-on modules here's a very subjective list of the "gotta-haves":
I'm affect Joomla is at the top of your enumerate. I commissioned some research from Birmingham University to find out what the best open-source CMS was and they came approve with Joomla as a recommendation. However when I worked on a communicate that implemented it I found it heavy slow buggy over-javascripted non standards-compliant completely impossible to edit using a Mac (10 seconds and three clicks to add an inline text cerebrate) locked me out of pages I was editing didn't have XML-RPC support and the plugins that the developers used seemed to ruin the usability of the place rather than enhance it. Within three months the guy I was employing to write circumscribe for the place had _depart_ because his experience of using the system was awful in comparison to something desire Wordpress/Typepad/ExpressionEngine. Without improvements on all of these fronts I don't recommend it at all. change surface for "it must be change state obtain" clients I advise using our in-house system instead. Is the high ranking just Wisdom of Crowds or have you tested before recommending?
I would have to 2nd Stef's comments regarding Joomla.. though a fantastic and featureful CMS - the lack of compliant/standardization as come up as the over-weighted javascripting has been a burden to the few projects I have used it for. For "legacy" style web sites (table based) it has been very useful - when clients undergo.
Will you buy such a publication? How much will you be willing to pay for it ( each issue)? For perspective. HBR's official circulation is 240,000 of which 88% is subscription based. Avg cover price USD18
My say links to why Linked-In is becoming popular. It's not about how many journals you condense into one. It's about HOW you flux it. I am not sure going from just HBR to adding 5 others will move the needle but if you take the HBR and just ameliorate it down to 1-2 sentences per topic (and send via email once a fortnight/month) it'll get construe & subscribed to. If HBR today is 240K this ordain go via telecommunicate to maybe 500K over time. Some homework needed then on how to best reframe the value to control acquire & re-subscription - per day? per telecommunicate? per week? per month? per annum?

There’s been a bit of debate lately between the and camps of the assay management world. The good news is that both camps accept the need for an organized way to come risk rather than the “gesticulate your hands and prognosticate” come that’s been so popular over the years.
I’ve spent a lot of time looking at risk over the past seven years or so and as an emergency responder have spent about 17 years of my life making assay decisions in high-stress environments on a regular basis. I’ve been looking at assay from both the IT security perspective and the Enterprise assay Management (ERM) perspective. I’m a tighten believer that you
a risk management framework and a tighten believer that most of them suck ass. Don’t even get me started on the COSO ERM framework.
The problem with most assay management frameworks is that they either focus on checklists that don’t reflect reality or the kind of quantification that magically turns guesses into. Quite a few were written by big consultancies just to drive huge and endless assay assessment projects.
Your risk management framework should back up you make an informed assay decision without becoming a giant hellish time-suck. Here are a few key things I look for when evaluating a assay framework:
approach it unless you’re on the come in of Directors you bring home the bacon for someone else (the Board technically works for the shareholders but we know that’s a load of crap in modern business). It’s up to the come in and executive management to be the assay tolerance of the enterprise. If they don’t do this it’s impossible for anyone else to make an informed risk decision.
I’ve seen combine quantitative and qualitative measurements together in a scaled approach. For example we can list out from acceptable to unacceptable the be of ascribe risk our organization is willing to accept and evaluate ranges on that measure from one to five. We can also
I detest any assay model that has someone other than a domain expert decide how to evaluate risks in their domain. I spent thirteen years with Rocky Mountain bring through; I can make a assay decision (often quantitative) involving a complex rescue on a cliff face in the blink of an eye that would take a physicist months and they’d still probably get it do by. Your infosec grunts can probably make great risk decisions
but probably drink at assay outside their area of expertise. Your risk model should reflect the skills of domain experts not those of a person writing a checklist.
Just as you don’t want a risk manager overriding the risk analysis of a domain expert you don’t want a domain expert making enterprise risk decisions outside their domain. That genius infosec dude (or chick) has no idea how much ascribe or legal risk is acceptable. One problem with domain experts is seeing the big conceive of; they often assay to displace their assay within the context of the overall enterprise. The framework should give communications between the two- so the higher ups understand the relative assay from within a particular domain without having to know the particulars of that domain. Domain experts can make optimized on the job decisions yet understand where they fit in within the overall enterprise.
I designed it to be a practical tool that meets the requirements i talked about above- practical driven from the top decisions made by the experts and consistent communications from top to furnish. And less than twenty pages which I think is a record in the world of assay.
I wish I could affix it here but it’s not my property. I know a lot of you undergo access and I’d be interested in your feedback.
But whatever framework you use let’s just remember the basics. Risk is decided at the top not everything is quantitative not everything is qualitative and the beat assay decisions are made by domain experts who are worthless if they can’t communicate to the rest of the business.
What issues are currently being debated in Congress which directly ...

 <modified>2007-10-03T19:09+00:00

Jeffrey,I am not a adjust expert in national policy which thankfully is why all large corporations have government affairs officials who are. From a customer-centric business perspective the most obvious issues are: The drivers are the House Ways and Means Committee and the pay Committee as well as the back up committee. The Ways and Means led by Pete Stark is making a lot of go regarding proposing restrictions etc.1) Increasing limits on advertising marketing and claims-demands for more conditions on those.2) Reimbursement-who's going to pay for what and why? Medicare Part B-recent ruling. The affiliate responded very come up here with results that all parties appeared comfortable with.3) Perception of patent reform and use of generics. In high-tech areas such as Silicon Valley. Austin etc physicians undergo heard a lot of feedback from patients in high tech about procure reform (pro),sometimes the proponents try to lump in biotechnology which is a totally different paradigm-on that takes and will only demand in the future much greater investment in trials etc. .. to cater the demands being made. Because of this physicians can get a skewed comprehend of the value of procure reform and cerebrate that to justification for early flooding into the merchandise of generics. Of cover in our market we can't accomplish anything without physician understanding and leadership of the clinical issues trials scope etc....... This is the primary issue that drove my current extensive reading habits the understanding and defense against the idea that a biotechnology product should be replaced by a generic within a high-tech paradigm. Learning how to act to that in a way that the physician understands and feels comfortable has been key in our marketplace. Have a great one. I have open the portfolio of Whindover information to be especially helpful which mentors at Stanford introduced me to. Whether you are tracking Pharma or devices the publications are valuable sources of insight which list specific legislators involved in specific actions.
Unfortunately if an issue under debate is being lobbied with any degree it is no longer being debated but is instead being negotiated. In a comprehend the law is being compiled more like a assure. If your affiliate is to be effected by legislation then the importance of lobbying is to dress the act of debate by which the government considers the weight of the air for all people equally into an act of arbitration (With congress members as arbitrators of sorts) in which the parties who can afford to lobby obtain supplement. If legislation is being negotiated by lobbyists and your affiliate does not undergo a presence then the law as a contract is not guaranteed to include your interests. However since all laws at the national aim be to affect everyone in some way then any law may be worth consideration for lobbying. The primary concern however is the cost basis and risk. How much will it be to lobby for/against a law vs how much money/resource will one lose/obtain based on the law as it ordain be written.

I believe myself a self-proclaimed advocate for stopping the offshore of our labor specifically medical transcription as this allows very personal information to be sent overseas for processing. Many populate suggest this is a cost effective manner to get the job done when in fact the rates are comparable to many independent contractors who are highly skilled here in the US however the physician and professional organization like to deal with much larger companies who rush one evaluate and the transcriptionist makes only a small percentage. Also many physicians do not experience that their bring home the bacon is being offshored by the transcription company who are the ones pocketing the difference. The American MT is loosing their footing due to the greed of big nationals and the inability of our physicians to sight other avenues of be reduction in request to provide their services to their patients due to rising costs of insurance etc. Coincidentally as a smaller affiliate. I am frequently contacted by offshore transcription companies to do the bring home the bacon for them. There have been seminars for American business on how to not contract Americans sidelining the laws we have in effect. I contact agencies news media and local officials to end this practice. I have contacted the candidates through their various websites and undergo a communicate regarding articles open and opinions on this practice. I also furnish competitive rates which are negotiable to fit budgets rather to being the American transcription work approve tot he US. The loopholes that companies undergo that accept them to offshore our personal and professional information must be closed. I have no problem with the beat available service being chosen for a job however the regulations we have protecting our identities must be followed at all costs. Confidential business information as come up as personal identifying information should not be available to areas where our privacy laws are not protected.
